ASCO & Landmark Power Holdings: Groundbreaking Carbon Capture & Utilisation (CCU) project nears completion

The UK’s first highly efficient power station equipped with ASCO CO₂ recovery systems is currently under construction in Rhodesia, Worksop, Nottinghamshire. ASCO Carbon Dioxide is supplying the CO₂ recovery and processing plant, which will recover and utilise four tonnes of liquid CO₂ per hour (Carbon Capture & Utilisation or CCU).

The £30 million power station in Nottinghamshire, UK, is the first to be developed using Landmark Power Holdings’ FlexPower Plus® technology for highly efficient, carbon-neutral electricity generation. The 10 MW power station will supply electricity to around 10,000 households.

The plant incorporates a range of established and proven technologies from some of the world’s leading industrial technology companies, including ASCO Carbon Dioxide Ltd

.“The fact that ASCO is part of this unique project and is working with great companies to deliver the UK’s first decarbonised power plant makes us incredibly proud. This will be a milestone and a model for sustainable energy generation worldwide, helping to achieve the vital ‘net-zero’ climate targets,” says
Fabian Weber, Director of Marketing & Communications at ASCO Carbon Dioxide.

Mick Avison, Founder and Managing Director of Landmark Power Holdings, adds: “We are proud to be making significant progress in our mission to bring climate-neutral electricity to the UK through the construction of our power stations, and we are delighted to have ASCO Carbon Dioxide as a partner on this journey. Their expertise and commitment to sustainability fit perfectly with our vision of a stronger circular economy in energy generation.”

Off-take agreement for captured CO₂ signed
even before the project’s commissioning The ASCO CO₂ recovery plants will capture the CO₂ in the exhaust gas from the gas-fired Rolls-Royce MTU engines and process it into food-grade liquid CO₂. BUSE Gases Ltd, a leading global supplier of industrial and specialty gases, has signed a 15-year off-take agreement for food-grade CO₂ even before the project has come on stream. This agreement is also a first of its kind

.“CO₂ deliveries are scheduled to begin in early 2024. However, should certain volumes become available earlier, we can access them without any issues. In principle, this agreement guarantees a stable and reliable supply of tens of thousands of tonnes of food-grade CO₂ per year, regardless of fertiliser production,” says Dimitris Sfikas, CEO of BUSE Gases Ltd.

Fabian Weber is delighted with the early CO₂ off-take agreement: “This demonstrates the potential of Carbon Capture & Utilisation. The use of food-grade CO₂, e.g. in the food and beverage industry, forms a value chain that becomes more stable and independent of ammonia production thanks to these sources. The CO₂ producer significantly reduces its carbon footprint, gas companies such as BUSE tap into new sources, and industries with CO₂ requirements enjoy greater security of supply. A classic win-win-win situation.”
