ASCO unveils a transfer system for dry ice pellets
The increased awareness of dry ice as a highly efficient coolant, triggered by the shipment of the COVID-19 vaccine, led to new market requirements. In collaboration with companies from the logistics sector and the German development partner ‘Joest’, the ‘ASCO ARS pellet transfer system’ was subsequently developed.
The key requirements were to dispense the dry ice pellets, delivered by dry ice producers in transport containers, into smaller packaging units with high precision and without causing any damage. The extremely low temperature of the product and the resulting temperature difference from the ambient environment posed a particular challenge. Different transport containers in the feed system, various selectable batch sizes and the temporary storage of the box volume also had to be integrated into the system solution.
For the “ASCO ARS pellet transfer system”, a customised load-handling device for container handling and a product hopper for holding the dry ice pellets were designed and manufactured. Special vibrating conveyor chutes are used for product dosing and hopper discharge. All cold-sensitive areas are suitably shielded. An extendable distribution chute is also fitted to ensure maximum flexibility. The entire system is operated by an intelligent control system with Dosing Logic 2.0.
