"We were in the right position"

ASCO spoke to Deon Roux, CEO and owner of Dry Ice International Company in South Africa. The company has been the leading dry ice supplier in South Africa since 1994. ASCO recently supplied a P28i dry ice pelletiser to this customer. We are keen to find out more about the company, its business activities and the use of dry ice in South Africa in general.

Mr Roux, what prompted your recent decision to purchase a P28i dry ice pelletiser?
We have been working with ASCO machines for 20 years! Our production facilities include the following machines:

dry ice block machine 1 x P600
dry ice machine 3 x P28
dry ice pelletisers 1 x A220P
dry ice pelletiser 1 x A120P
dry ice pelletiser 5 xpelletiser C500P

How many production sites do you have and how much dry ice is produced there?
We have four different factories in four different cities across South Africa. Some of the factories operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Who are your main customers/sectors for dry ice?
Dry ice for dry ice blasting is mainly used in substations, stators and rotors, food factories, the mining industry, the printing industry and the automotive industry. In South Africa, dry ice is also used in the catering industry, by courier services, for food exports, in mechanical engineering, for emergency cooling, in leisure activities, in agriculture, for hunting and in fishing.

Has COVID-19 had a major impact on dry ice production in South Africa? For example, has there been a change in home deliveries? Transport of vaccines?
Dry Ice International Company has been transporting vaccines, pharmaceuticals and veterinary medicines since 1994 (28 years). We were well-positioned to handle the vaccines imported into South Africa and supplied dry ice to regulate the distribution of the products.
