Dry ice instead of quartz sand: Bad Langensalza light metal foundry reduces cleaning effort
According to the managing director, Dipl.-Ing. (FH) Norbert Stein, quartz sand was used as standard for cleaning the casting tools until the introduction of dry ice. However, he states that this came with significant drawbacks, such as increased wear and tear on the tools being cleaned. Repair costs for the hydraulic cylinders were higher because the adhering quartz sand led to wear and tear on the seals. Furthermore, the higher dust levels not only caused contamination in the ambient air for employees (health and safety), but also had a negative impact on general cleanliness. Machine and mould cleaning was therefore always a labour-intensive process. The use of dry ice blasting increased the efficiency of the cleaning process, leading to cost savings.
