CO₂ recovery from thermal desalination processes

Sustainable CO₂ Recovery and Intelligent Utilisation in Thermal Desalination PÜrocesses

Thermal desalination plants are among the most energy-intensive industrial processes worldwide. At the same time, they continuously produce CO₂-containing exhaust gases from steam and heat generation. Modern desalination concepts are therefore increasingly relying on integrated CO₂ solutions: the recovery of CO₂ from flue gases and its targeted use within water treatment. ASCO offers comprehensive systems for this purpose – from CO₂ capture, through storage and evaporation, to precise dosing.

CO₂ Recovery from Thermal Desalination Processes

In thermal seawater desalination plants such as MSF (Multi-Stage Flash) or MED (Multi-Effect Distillation), large quantities of steam are generated for the distillation process. The resulting flue gases from boilers and heat generators contain significant concentrations of CO₂, which can be efficiently recovered.

ASCO CO₂ recovery systems reliably separate the CO₂ from the flue gases produced during steam generation and prepare it for further use or storage. This significantly reduces emissions whilst simultaneously tapping into a valuable source of CO₂ directly on-site. Particularly in continuously operated desalination plants, recovery from flue gas offers a stable and predictable supply of CO₂.

CO₂ as a Process Medium in Water Treatment

In addition to recovery, the active use of CO₂ plays a central role within the desalination process. Particularly in the treatment of process and waste water, precise pH control is crucial for stable, safe and long-term plant operation.

CO₂ is ideally suited for pH neutralisation, as it forms carbonic acid in water and lowers the pH value in a controlled manner – without the use of aggressive chemicals. This is particularly relevant in the conditioning of cooling, rinse or process water, as well as in the post-treatment of desalinated water

CO₂ Dosing Systems for pH Neutralisation

ASCO CO₂ Dosing Systems enable precise, demand-based dosing of CO₂ for pH regulation in desalination plants. The systems are designed for continuous industrial operation and can be seamlessly integrated into existing water treatment and control systems.

The use of CO₂ instead of mineral acids reduces corrosion, increases operational safety and simplifies handling. At the same time, the risk to personnel and the environment is reduced. Combining the system with a CO₂ recovery unit is particularly efficient: the separated CO₂ can be used directly on-site for pH neutralisation. This creates a closed CO₂ cycle that lowers emissions, reduces chemical consumption and optimises operating costs.

Comprehensive CO₂ System Solutions from ASCO

ASCO offers desalination plant operators a comprehensive portfolio – from CO₂ recovery from flue gases through to storage and evaporation, right through to precise dosing systems for water treatment. Thanks to decades of experience, modular plant concepts and high process integration, we create tailor-made solutions that integrate seamlessly into existing infrastructures.

In this way, CO₂ is not viewed as an emission, but as a valuable resource that sustainably improves the efficiency, environmental compatibility and cost-effectiveness of thermal desalination processes.
