CO₂ recovery from oil industry processes
Efficient CO₂ Recovery in the Oil Industry – Sustainable and Cost-Effective.
The oil industry is an energy-intensive sector with numerous processes that release CO₂. Reforming processes, hydrotreating and hydrocracking, as well as the combustion of gases in process heaters and boilers, generate CO₂ in varying concentrations. ASCO offers technologies that efficiently recover these CO₂ streams, treat them and bring them up to a usable standard. This helps to reduce emissions, cut costs and meet regulatory requirements.
Applications of CO₂ Stack Gas Recovery in the Oil Industry
In oil refineries and petrochemical plants, flue gases are produced from various processes that are ideally suited for CO₂ recovery. These include reforming processes such as steam or catalytic reforming, hydrotreating and hydrocracking plants, as well as combustion gases from process heaters and boilers. The flue gases contain CO₂ in sufficient concentrations to allow it to be efficiently extracted using modern absorption processes. The recovered substance can then be used industrially or resold, enabling companies to benefit economically whilst simultaneously improving their environmental footprint.
Why Recover CO₂?
Recovering CO₂ from flue gas offers several advantages: companies reduce emissions and meet regulatory requirements, improve their sustainability performance and, at the same time, generate a valuable resource that can be reused industrially. Utilising an existing by-product results in cost savings that pay for themselves quickly, particularly in continuous or high-volume production.
How Does the Recovery Process Work?
ASCO flue gas recovery systems operate fully automatically and continuously. The flue gases are first cooled and cleaned before flowing through a stainless steel absorption column. There, the special absorbent (ASCOSORB-RS) reacts with the CO₂, which is chemically bound and subsequently released again in a stripper. The recovered gas is purified, dried and compressed, producing high-purity CO₂ that is ready for industrial applications.
Advantages of CO₂ Stack Gas Recovery in the Oil Industry
- Cost savings: Reduced need to purchase CO₂, use as a raw material in downstream processes.
- Sustainability: Significantly reduced CO₂ emissions support climate targets and ESG strategies.
- Process reliability: Stable CO₂ availability for various production areas.
- System integration: Easy integration into existing production facilities.
- Regulatory compliance: Compliance with environmental regulations through more efficient flue gas treatment.
