CO₂ recovery in biogas plants

Sustainably Recovering and Reusing CO₂ from Biogas Processes.

In biogas plants, CO₂ is produced as a by-product of fermentation and processing. This CO₂ is generally of high purity and can be efficiently recovered. Recovery makes it possible to extract CO₂ from raw biogas, during processing into biomethane, or from process gases in anaerobic stages. This not only makes valuable resources usable, but also reduces emissions and significantly increases the sustainability of the plants.

Applications in Biogas Plants

In biogas plants, CO₂ is produced primarily during the anaerobic digestion of organic materials such as slurry, food waste or energy crops. In the raw biogas phase, CO₂ is produced alongside methane and must be separated during the upgrading of biogas to biomethane. Process gases containing CO₂ are also produced during the anaerobic stages of agricultural and industrial biogas plants. Through the targeted use of ASCO recovery systems, this CO₂ can be effectively isolated before the purified methane is reused or fed into the gas grid.

Technology and Operating Principle

Recovery in biogas plants is based on automated absorption and stripping technology that selectively removes CO₂ from the process gases. The BPR system uses specialised solvents for this purpose, which chemically bind the CO₂ whilst methane and other valuable components remain unchanged. The CO₂ is then compressed, dried and processed for further use. This fully automated process allows even large quantities of CO₂ to be recovered efficiently and reliably.

Advantages of CO₂ Recovery in Biogas Plants

  • Resource utilisation: The recovered CO₂ can be used in the drinks, food or chemical industries and reduces the need for externally purchased CO₂.
  • Sustainability: Recovery minimises emissions and supports the operators’ climate targets.
  • Process reliability: Stable recovery processes ensure consistent gas quality and guarantee safe methane production.
  • Cost-effectiveness: Particularly in continuous biogas production, the investment in a recovery plant pays for itself quickly, as CO₂ becomes a usable by-product.

Integration Into Existing Plants

ASCO recovery systems can be flexibly integrated into existing biogas plants. Whether agricultural biogas plants, industrial digestion plants or combined energy and waste utilisation plants – the systems are modular in design and can be adapted to the respective process requirements.

Future Prospects and Sustainability

By utilising CO₂ from biogas processes, companies can make an active contribution to the circular economy and CO₂ reduction. At the same time, recovery opens up new opportunities to use CO₂ in other industrial applications, such as food production, beverage bottling or chemical processes. This optimises biogas not only as an energy source but also as a valuable supplier of raw materials.
