CO₂ recovery from dry ice production
Efficiently recover CO₂ from dry ice production.
Greater efficiency, lower emissions – thanks to closed CO₂ cycles.
Dry ice production offers ideal conditions for particularly efficient CO₂ recovery. During the manufacture of pellets, nuggets or blocks, gaseous CO₂ is always produced alongside the CO₂ snow; without recovery, this would escape unused. Modern ASCO recovery systems capture this gas directly during the process, treat it and feed it back into production – a closed-loop system that delivers both economic and environmental benefits.
What is CO₂ recovery from dry ice production?
During dry ice production, liquid CO₂ is expanded: part of it solidifies into CO₂ snow, from which the actual dry ice is pressed, whilst the remainder flows back in gaseous form. This gas is of high purity, but is lost without recovery. Recovery systems make it possible to divert the gas directly from the machine, compress it and feed it back into the storage tank. This creates a virtually closed CO₂ cycle, which significantly reduces the need for fresh CO₂ and conserves valuable resources.
How does the recovery process work?
Recovery begins directly at the dry ice production machine, where the CO₂ gas produced is captured and fed via pipework to a compression system. There, it is brought to the required pressure, liquefied and then stored in the CO₂ storage tank. As the gas from the production process is already of high purity, this cycle is particularly efficient and can be seamlessly integrated into existing plants. The entire process is largely automated and ensures that the recovered CO₂ can be reused immediately for dry ice production.
Why is CO₂ recovery particularly worthwhile here?
Dry ice production is one of the processes with particularly high CO₂ consumption, as a considerable amount of gas is required for every kilogram of dry ice. A large proportion of this CO₂ (approx. 55%) escapes during production and can – with the appropriate recovery technology – be retained directly within the process. For operators, this means a significant reduction in CO₂ requirements, a more stable supply situation and a marked improvement in their own sustainability performance. The closed-loop system results in an overall process that is both ecologically sound and economically highly attractive.
Typical applications
Dry ice producers and companies in industry, logistics, food processing and the pharmaceutical sector are increasingly turning to CO₂ recovery when they produce large quantities of dry ice or require a continuous supply of pellets and blocks. Wherever there are regular production cycles, recovery realises its full potential and enables sustainable, economically stable operations.
