From Romanshorn to the world: Over five decades, ASCO has not only advanced CO₂ and dry ice technology, but also expanded its global presence. The headquarters in Romanshorn formed the heart of the company from 1975 to 2024, before it was relocated to Wittenbach. The first international step was taken in 1987 when ASCO acquired Carbonic Industries and founded the subsidiary ASCO Carbon Dioxide Ltd. in Christchurch, New Zealand. The Hornby plant produced CO₂ systems and fire extinguishers for worldwide export and at times employed up to 100 people. In 2014, production was relocated to Europe, but the move marked the beginning of an internationally networked corporate strategy.
Another milestone followed in South Africa in 1998 with the founding of ASCO Cryotank Ltd in Durban. Here, special tank systems for liquefied gases were manufactured and shipped all over the world. France was added in 2005 when the acquisition of Diffusion Hydraulique S.A.R.L. formed ASCO France, which now functions as a service center. In 2014, the cooperation between ASCO and BUSE Gastek made Germany a central location in Bad Hönningen for the development, storage, shipping, and pre-assembly of CO₂ systems. Finally, in North America, the subsidiary ASCO Carbon Dioxide Inc. was established in Jacksonville, Florida, in 2016, which now handles sales and service for North America.
Today, ASCO and its partners work closely together worldwide, so that machines and systems are in use in over 100 countries and customers everywhere receive the best possible service. At the same time, the company's roots in Switzerland remain strong: Remco was acquired in Eschlikon in 2011 and has since become the production site for dry ice blasting and production systems.
The history of ASCO shows how a company from Oberthurgau has become a global specialist in CO₂ and dry ice technology in 50 years – always characterized by a spirit of innovation, technical expertise, international presence, and close cooperation with partners worldwide.
