“SubZero Blasting Inc”, Colborne, Ontario, Canada
What was one of the most challenging and remarkable Dry Ice Blasting projects and why?
The most remarkable dry ice blasting job and results in my career this far just so happens to have taken place only hours ago as I write this.
In our area of Ontario, Canada, there is a massive ground radiation clean up project that has been taking place for the past 10 years approximately, and is still far from completion. Over the years SZB has been deployed numerous times in order to decontaminate construction equipment with higher than acceptable radiation readings in the work zones or "hot zones", before that equipment can be removed from sites and redeployed into normal civilian type operations outside of clean up areas. Until today we have always utilized the power and abrasion of sandblasting, which works very well, however requires priming and repaint after.
About a month ago I suggested we do some tests using dry ice blasting rather than sandblasting, for the obvious reasons, such as mess and contaminated media to dispose of, abrasion and repainting, air borne contamination, and so on.
So today, April 10th 2024, we did testing on various pieces of equipment, with passing radiation results. Until now no one involved wanted to try this, until I was able to convince to do a test, as I was sure it would work. No dust, no abrasion, no repaint, no risk to accidentally damage to other components of equipment. Win-win for everyone. As I said this was just hours ago we received this news of passing results, so I'm sure dry ice blasting will become a big part of this project moving forward, I will know tomorrow after speaking with representatives from the company that has hired us.
Do you produce the dry ice for dry ice blasting yourself?
Yes, SZB operates a sister company called Dry Ice Solutions out of the same facility as SZB in Colborne, Ontario, Canada, we produce our own dry ice for SZB operations and for other company's that consume dry ice for a multitude of industries.
How well known is dry ice blasting as an (industrial) cleaning method in Canada?
Dry ice blasting is known in the industrial world in Canada, however I believe it is not as well known as it could be, it has a long way to go as far as education and showcasing the amazing benefits and also the industry has a long way to go in providing the quality of dry ice needed in order to show case and demonstrate properly.
To the best of my knowledge SZB and Dry Ice Solutions are the only dry ice manufacturer that specializes in the dry ice blast industry and understands the importance of fresh quality dry ice for effective blasting. This is the reason I entered into the manufacturing of dry ice business, I was tired of substandard dry ice, that in some cases was already multiple days old when received. No dry ice manufacturer in my area understands the blasting aspect and importance. This is SZB and Dry Ice Solutions mission moving forward to help the industry by providing consulting, training, top quality made to order fresh dense blasting dry ice with freshness guaranteed.
Could you imagine getting into the dry ice production business as a "supplier" for refrigerated logistics, food & beverage business or others?
SZB and Dry Ice solutions wants to supply dry ice to every industry possible, if they use it, we want there business.
